Is Optimism Come In Your Gene?

Sometime back, I read a book (can't recall which book i read it from) whereby the author mentioned that there are sufficient survey/test to proof that optimism is BORN (i.e. its in your gene). Personally, I don't buy the idea as I view that optimism can be MADE.

Having said that, I do agree that certain people are more receptive in accepting set-back/failure and move on faster than others. However, it doesn't means that there is no way for them to improve on their thinking.

Positive thinking is very important in every aspect of life (of course includes investment journey). You need to maintain enough level of positive thinking (optimism) before your tenacity runs out of steam. Also, we need positive thinking to fight against pre-mature surrendering. Just like in stock investment, we are bounds to face with set-back, so be it, just mentally prepared this small hiccups and move on (and of course, learn from it along the way too). As the saying goes, life is a journey and we are a failure only when we stop trying.

What do you think? Do you think optimism is born?

Cheers!

  2. Hi Richard

    The key here is objectivity.

I think being positive minded alone is not enough. It has to come with self realization and be objective at accepting setbacks and constructive criticisms.

    1. B : true! That's definitely one key when come to investment. Having said that, regardless of how objective we are, setback is unavoidable occasionally. Here is where optimism come into play ;-)

  3. Hi Richard,

Being Positive is extremely important. I have to agree with you. And I do sense all the positiveness and optimism in your blog. This is extremely good.

    Just a point to add.

Guess almost all people know we need to be positive as a part of success, happiness or living life. But the key is "it's easier said than done!" And also how often we exhibit this traits when face with problems. Not just simple problems but serious problems in life!

When you live your normal life, you advocates positive, optimism. Quite easy. But when face with life threatening disease, your love ones leave you, or your many years hard earn money gone ... That is when you really see the REAL battle of optimism Vs pessimism.

  4. In the poetic words of William Blake, “If the doors of perception were cleansed every thing would appear to man as it is, Infinite. For man has closed himself up, till he sees all things thro' narrow chinks of his cavern.”

If optimism means believing goodness will prevail reality then it is necessary that one equip himself with the right knowledge. This knowledge if applied faithfully can build the empire and fortune of man if he so desired.
