These Investing Rules Will Definitely Help Newbie Investors Like Me!

First, do take note that these rules are not created by me (for obvious reason since I am a newbie investor), I chanced upon a whole list of 50 simple rules from fool.sg and just hand-pick 10 of them to be shared over here.

For the complete list of the rules, check out the fool.sg blog post here. Thanks to the folks at fool.sg as I can relate to most of these rules.

Now, here are my favourites among them. In fact, many of them are applicable to life (and not only investing) in general :

1. Only invest in products and companies you can explain to a six-year old

2. Read more history and fewer forecasts.

3. Every five to seven years, people forget that recessions occur every five to seven years.

4. When in doubt, choose the investment with the lowest fee

5. You shouldn’t feel strongly about any investment you haven’t spent at least a week thinking about.

6. Change your mind as often as the facts change.

7. Sleep on every investment decision for a week, then run it by a trusted friend before acting.

8. You can probably afford not to be a great investor — you probably can’t afford to be a bad one.

9. Assume the worst, hope for the best, accept reality.

10. ”Invest in what you know” is dangerously simplified.

Do you have your own rules to add? Feel free to drop me a line or two in the comment section.

Cheers!

Four Important Singapore Shares Apps In My iOS devices

shares ios apps
I am just started with my Shares Investment Journey a couple of days ago and have not transacted anything yet, however, I've installed 4 important FREE iOS Apps related to Singapore shares which allow me to keep abreast with my investment on the go.

As I am a small investor, I do not wish to invest unnecessarily in some paid apps and thus resort to the best possible free apps available in the app market now.

Without further ado, here are the 4 free iOS apps in my iPhone and iPad Mini now:

1. Shares Investment (iOS link):
This is the companion app from one of the popular shares magazine in Singapore (naturally, it is also called Shares Investment). I use it to keep abreast of the latest market news and share prices.

2. SG Stock Alert (iOS link):
As the name implied, this app is meant to alert you when the parameters that you set (e.g. targeted price, volume etc...) is hit.

3. POEMS SG (iOS link):
This is the online share trading app from Phillips Securities, I will be using it to do the trading.

4. SG Stock Calc (iOS link):
This app will calculate for you what is your profit(or loss) and the returns (in %) just buy punching in the buy/sell prices, number of shares and the broker. It will take care of the rest, including the prevailing GST. Cool app!

What are the other Singapore shares related apps installed in your mobile devices?

Weekly Recap #1 - My Share Investing Journey @ 23rd Mar 2014

Since this is my maiden investing journey, I've decided my write a "Weekly Recap" posts on regular basis to share what I've done in the past week.

I will jot down  anything that I've learned or transacted over the past week, in relation to my Investing Venture.

So, here we go:

What I've Learned?
1. There are more than one approach/method of Value Investing. In short, not everyone can be Warren Buffett and we need to find an approach/method that suit our investment appetite and capability. One of the other approach was shared in my earlier post here (video).

2. The "minimum charges" of the commission charged by the brokers varies and I find that Citibank's Online trading platform is the lowest ($18 as compared to the others, which is $25). See my earlier post on this topic here.

Shares That Caught My Eyes So Far:
1. Riverstone Holdings  (AP4) @SGD0.805
2. Straco Corporation    (S85)  @SGD0.585
3. Tai Sin Electric Ltd   (500)  @SGD0.335

What Shares Have I Transacted?
1. No shares were transacted yet.

Useful Resources :
1. Google Finance's Stock Screener allow you to search for a particular set of stocks that matched your criteria like PE Ratio range, Price range etc.

That's it for today! Wish you have a great week ahead of you.

Another Way To Look At Value Investing In This 1 Hour Video

It's a stay-home Sunday, amidst the humid weather, I continue my internet research on investment to boost my knowledge about Value Investing. And the discovery today is an one hour plus Value Investing Seminar video conducted by Mr Eric Kong (from Aggregate Asset Management).

The speaker, Eric is a fund manager and his speech given me another perspective of Value Investing. In fact, his investment approach is kind of contradicts with Warren Buffett's, and with valid explanation. I believed most of the small investors can attest to it.

Following are a few key take away from the video :
1. Two of the key indicators in choosing stocks are PE (Price Earning) and Price To Book Ratios.
2. Price Eearning Ratio is how much you prepared to pay for the earning of the company? Hence, the lower the better.
3. Price To Book Ratio is how much would you pay to get back what the company left if it is liquidated? Hence, the lower the better.

Cheers!

Should I Invest Via Citibank Online Brokerage Instead Of Phillips Securities' POEMs Now?

Share trading commission charge
As part of my investment venture, finding a suitable online trading platform is paramount at the moment. Sometime back, for whatever reason, I've registered for the Phillips Securities' POEMS platform but never really traded anything there.

Through my recent research, I noticed that there are quite a substantial variation of commission rates between the platforms and following are my findings (comparing Phillips Securities' POEMS with Citibank's Online Brokerage) :

                             Commission Rate (%)     Minimum (SGD)
POEMS                      0.25                              $25
CITIBANK                   0.25                              $18

For a small investor, the minimum charge is important as for a start, I am pretty sure that my trading value would not hit anything more than the minimum charges. To exceed it, the trading value (per transaction) need to be more than SGD10,000.

So, purely from commission rate perspective, I believed I should opt for Citibank's. Or did I miss anything out of this equation? If you folks are familiar with either of the platform, do help to provide your advice.

Cheers!

10 Quotes From Warren Buffett That Go A Long Way

Warren Buffett
Warren Buffett, the world's best investor in our time is one of the most respected investment gurus with many followers.

(3) You don't need to be a rocket scientist. Investing is not a game where the guy with the 160 IQ beats the guy with 130 IQ.

(4) You only find out who is swimming naked when the tide goes out.

(5) When we own portions of outstanding businesses with outstanding managements, our favourite holding period is forever.

(6) Time is the friend of the wonderful business, the enemy of the mediocre.

(7) The best thing that happens to us is when a great company gets into temporary trouble… We want to buy them when they’re on the operating table.

(8) I try to buy stock in businesses that are so wonderful that an idiot can run them. Because sooner or later, one will.

(9) It’s far better to buy a wonderful company at a fair price than a fair company at a wonderful price.

My Stock Pick # 1: Straco and Riverstone

OK! This being my very first attempt to select potential stocks, it is expected to take a little bit longer for my research and reading.

Also, personally think that picking the right stock is the hardest in share investing venture. There are simply too much information to digest and different opinions and voices are forming online. Thus, I am trying to restrict myself to only a few reliable resources as research materials. So far, I've identified SGX and The Motley Fool as my main sources.

Today, I've identified two potential stocks for my picking and they are :

1. Straco Corporation Limited (S85):
- Industry : Recreational Goods
- Develops and operates cable car facilities, aquatic related facilities, and dolphin and sea lion performance aquariums
- Last Price : SGD0.555

2. Riverstone Holding Limited (AP4):
- Industry : Rubber & Plastics
- Manufacturing of rubber gloves and latex for healthcare as well as room cleaning industries
- Last Price : SGD0.795

I am still in the midst of digesting some of the related statistics but so far my initial findings are quite positive. I will share more information on my findings in the subsequent posts.

Are you the shareholder of these 2 stocks or going to be one? What is your take?

Cheers!
