Market News In 2 Minutes @ 29th April 2015 (Q&M Dental Group, Far East Hospitality Trust)

As stock investors (even though a small one), it is important to keep abreast with the latest financial and market news. Since I am in it, I thought it might be worthwhile to share it out with my readers too.

Hence, I started this "Market News In 2 Minutes" series.

Following are the "Market News In 2 Minutes" for today :

1. REITS : Far East Hospitality Trust (Q5T) - Its gross revenue dropped 10.8 percent to $27.4 million as it experienced lower average occupancy and average daily rate this quarter. Coupled with a negative tax adjustment, income available for distribution fell 16.8 percent to $19.2 million. Going forward, it is expected that arrivals from regional markets will slow given the sluggish economic environment affecting corporate travel as well as the strong Singapore dollar continuing to weigh on the tourism sector. On the other hand, major sporting and meetings, incentives, conferencing, exhibitions events slated for this year in addition to upcoming attractions may help bolster demand.. (source : Shares Investment)

2. Q&M Dental Group (QC7) - Proposed to acquire TP Dental for $28.6 million and is on the lookout to do more mergers and acquisitions in Singapore. The group is paying $18 million in cash and remaining $10.6 million via new shares at $0.70668 per share to the owners of TP Dental. Q&M has a rough 60 clinics islandwide and around 180 dentists, which is one tenth of the entire dental clinic and dentists population in Singapore. The group hopes to provide more services to patients and take care of more education, in terms of training local and foreign dentists. Having raised $60 million through issuing a medium term note at 4.4 percent in March this year, the group plans to put its cash reserves to good use, to attract more dental-related firms to join the group. The group has plans to open more TP Dental centres in Singapore and expand overseas where Q&M has been building its presence. (source : Shares Investment)

One Word To Describe Your Current Investment Mentality

This post will be very very short...

After slightly more than one year of getting my hand "dirty" in stock investment and a couple of trades later, just feel like reflecting myself about my journey so far and what is my current investment mentality.

Prior to plunging into stock investment, I always deemed stocks as some kind of gambling (which might be still true since there is no 100% guarantee of "sure wins" in stock investment). However, after learning more of the fundamental of investment as well as the risk of the inflation, not investing is kind of a "sure loss" to me.

Having said that, I am still consider myself a "kiasi" (for the benefit of those not familiar with Singlish, it means “chicken-hearted") investor and hence one word that can closely describe my current investment mentality is : CAUTIOUSNESS!

In short, I am still playing it very cautiously at the moment. What is the one word that can describe your investment mentality now?

Cheers!

Astonishing Must Share Drawing - (How You Live Your DREAM?

Dream
Regardless of our age and stage in life, we all have dreams (or ever dreamt before). The dream that I am talking about here is what YOU want to do/achieve in your life. Of course, many a time, we managed to conjure up more than one dream and hop from one dream to another along the way.

Yesterday, I chanced upon a very powerful drawing about how different people react differently towards their dream. The original words are in Chinese, I've took the liberty to translate them into English for my readers who are not able to read Chinese.

Check it out below and I am sure you are able to ascertain for yourself whether you are A, B, C, D, E or F ;-)

Stockflock - Transformative Changes One Year On....

Stockflock
One year ago, I met with the humble young chap (let's call him W) over lunch and he shared with me about his idea on developing a platform/tool called Stockflock to serve the retail investors by providing them some customized stock information/charts/statistic.

One year on, the tool is in soft launch stage now and I can see a huge transformation from the earlier version. In fact, it is a complete revamp with some nice and easy to grab charts. At the moment, the key feature is allowing user generate a couple of critical charts (like Price Earning Ratio, Price Book Ratio, Earning Growth etc...) by simply inputting the stock of interest. The best part is, it will also generate the similar charts of its closest competitor for easier comparison.

Of course, if this is the only feature, then it might not be that attractive as there are many other platform already doing this stuff. What is more interesting is about the upcoming features to be launched gradually, they are :

1. Customised and save-able stock screener i.e. you can save your screener criteria and whenever there is a change to the result of the screening, you will get notified or the screening result will refreshed itself.

2. Email notification/alert of the new company announcement/action of your stocks of choice. Currently, I guess most of us go to the SGX site to check the new company announcement/action, one at a time.

Following are some screen shots of the Stockflock site :

Input "UMS" in the search bar and above is the first screen being displayed
The platform default the closest competitor (Elec & Eltek in this case) but you can add your own competitor, if you deemed fit
Displaying of some key ratios/charts for comparison (1)

Displaying of some key ratios/charts for comparison (2)

Displaying of some key ratios/charts for comparison (3)

You can view more ratios/chart by clicking on "More Details" on the first screen shot
As it is, the platform is still in its infancy stage, I believed it will evolve into a bigger thing in the near future. Meanwhile, some changes that I hope to see are:

1. Provide more guide/help on how to read the charts (for example, when you mouse over the chart, it will show you some information of PE ratio and why it is important etc..). This will help the newbie investors in understanding the charts/ratios better

2. To provide some industry benchmark/average for the relevant charts so that user can make the necessary comparison. For example, in the Price Earning (PE) Ratio, to draw a line across the chart to denote the industry average/standard.

I especially like its elegant and minimalist user interface, do feel free to check out the stockflock platform for yourself. If you have any feedback, feel free to comment in the comment section and I will help to convey the message to W

UMS and EV Energy Partners - Two New Addition To My Portfolio

It has been a while since my buy/sell transaction. On 22/04/2015, I made two purchases within the same day. One is UMS (588.SI) which I am monitoring closely for quite some time and the other is an oil and gas stock from NASDAQ, EV Energy Partner LP (EVEP)

I invested in these two counters more for dividend income purpose. For UMS, I've written a number of posts prior to this on how it is in my watch list (click here and here for my earlier posts). My entry price is 2 cents higher than my original target (I bought it at 55 cents instead of 53 cents) but learning from the experience of Warren Buffet (via his sharing of his 2014 Annual Report to his share holders), there is no points get too fixated your "ideal" price if you feel right about the stock.

As for EV Energy Partner LP, it is a surprise even to myself. While doing my research on the potential dividend stocks in US, this counter came out strongly and I decided to take the plunge (after my little success story on Facebook counter (my maiden US stock). Anyway, following are my reason for the investment :

1. Consistent and growing dividend paying counter (5 years average dividend yield of 8.6%, even with the With-holding tax of 30%, it is still about 6% dividend yield)
2. Personally think that oil price is on its road of recovery and hence the
3. The stock is traded at a discount (Price/Book ratio of 0.75)
4. Revenue are growing for the past 3 years.
5. Wanted to have my maiden experience in receiving the dividend cheque from the US stocks.

Oh, by the way, both counters will be paying their quarterly dividend in the month of May 2015.

For my latest overall minion size portfolio, check it out here

More Singapore ETFs Will Be Accessible To The Retail Investors Soon

ETF, Exchange Traded Fund
Aside from the individual stocks and REITs (Real Estate Investment Trusts), one of the other more popular investment vehicles among the retail investors is ETFs (Exchange Traded Funds). As the name implied, ETFs are investment funds that are traded on stock exchanges by producing returns that track/replicate the performance and composition of a specific index such as stocks or commodity. If you like to know more about ETFs, check out MoneySense' coverage here

There are 89 ETFs listed in Singapore Exchange (SGX) and two of the more popular ones are SPDR Straits Times Index ETF and Nikko AM Singapore STI ETF which track the STI performance. At the moment, only 9 out of the 89 ETFs are classified under Excluded Investment Products (EIPs), which means investors can invest these 9 ETFs without needing to take any prior assessment. The balance 80 ETFs are classified under Specified Investment Products (SIPs), which means investors who wanted to invest in SIPs had to be assessed by the broker firms or bank.

Soon, this is set to change as MAS (Monetary Authority Of Singapore) is in the midst of relaxing the rules of ETFs i.e. more ETFs are expected to be classified under EIPs and hence more ETFs will be accessible by the retail investors. According to the report in yesterday's Sunday Times, MAS is expected to announce the changes this week.

On the personal front, I am looking into Dollar Cost Averaging investment in STI ETF via Maybank's Monthly Investment Plan (currently pending for their approval of my account application).

Watching Movie Trailers Is Like Reading Stock Recommendation Reports (latest Batman vs Superman trailer inside)

Being a movie buff, besides watching the actual movies, I like to watch the movie trailers too. In fact, I do subscribe to quite a number movies/trailers Youtube channels so as to avoid missing out on the latest trailers/teasers from the upcoming Hollywood movies.

To me, watching movie trailers is like reading the recommendation reports from the brokers/financial institutions.

Why do I said so? Here are a few of my reasons :

1. No matter how crazy I am towards movies, I would not be able to watch every movie being released, hence, watching the trailers will be my first/additional "informed" gauge of whether it is worth my money to watch it in the cinemas. Just like in investing, it is impossible to invest in every stocks that come into our radar, hence, the recommendation report is one of the "informed" gauge that I usually used before deciding to dig into them further.

Do take note that I used "informed", it doesn't mean that it (the movie or stock) will surely come out exactly as per what I expected (basing on the trailer/report) but at least there is potential.

2. Trailers and recommendation reports are equally subjective i.e. for the same trailer/report, some people see the plus points and others see the negative points. Just take for example, I like the latest trailer of Batman vs Superman - Dawn Of Justice (which is just released a couple of hours ago) but one of my other movie buff friend don't like it at all (we both are superhero movies fans, by the way). Check out the trailer below and let me know what do you think?

3. Both movie trailer and recommendation report has the potential to create herd effect among the movie goers (and investors). For example, a poorly executed trailer/report might shed some negative light on the movie/stock, hence, even though ultimately it is proven that the movie/stock is a strong one (on hindsight), but it doesn't reflected well in the box office/stock price. Again, I am not saying that it is guarantee but there is potential for such effect.

Do you like to watch trailers too?

Cheers!

Difference Between Forex And Stock

A few weeks ago, one of my friend asked me whether I am into Forex trading, according to him, he is currently earning small sum every week via an "automated" Forex trading tool (or mobile app). Being completely newbie to Forex and just started stock investment not long ago, my answer is "not at the moment".

Of course, regardless which investment/trading vehicles, you can still make or loss money, ultimately it is dependent on your risk appetite as well as the vehicle that you are comfortable with.

I did a simple research to find out the differences between Forex and Stocks and here is what I've got:
difference between forex and stock investment
Difference between Forex and Stock
This reminded me two gurus that I've interviewed before in my "Interview with peer investors series" whom specialized in each of these vehicles. They are Alvin Chow of Big Fat Purse (click here for the interview post) and Ezekiel Chew of Asia Forex Mentor (click here for the interview post). Both of them are conducting their respective regular workshops for the keen learners.

Oh, by the way, Alvin's next Value Investing Mastery Course (Stock) is on 25th April 2015 (Sat) and Ezekiel's next AFM Forex Trading Course (Forex) is on 9th and 10th May 2015(Sat/Sun). To find out more of their respective workshops, click on their course names above.

To each its own but there is no harm learning new knowledge/skills that potentially earning us more money.

Uncle Stock Screener - Free Screener With Substance

Recently, I've chanced upon a free stock screener with a not so glam name - Uncle Stock Screener. Name aside, I find that this free screener came with full load of features/stocks information which I thought you folks might be interested to have a peep too.

There are many free stock screeners out there but following are some of the salient features/tools that Uncle Stock Screen stands out from the packs:

1. It covers most of the major equity markets from Europe, North America, South America, Australia, New Zealand and selected countries from Asia (surprisingly Malaysia is not in the list).

2. The parameters available for screening are comprehensive, following is the screen shot of the available high level categories of parameters :

3.  There are a number of predefined Top Lists (e.g. Levermann Top List, Piotroski Top List, Uncle's Stand Out Top List and Graham Top List etc.) that will facilitate users to extract those potential counters match the criteria/parameters set out by these gurus.

4. For each counter of your interest, you can access the relevant comprehensive stock information/chart just by a clicking of the button, following is just one sample page of the stock information screen:

5. It comes with its very own Uncle Stock Scores which is used as an yardstick for recommendation. for example, in the above screen, there is a "Buy - Wait" recommendation for Cleantech Solutions International Inc

6. It even came with 8 tips on stock investing (this should be useful for the newbies). You can access the tips directly from this link

I am still in the midst of exploring other features of Uncle Stock Screener, meanwhile, if you are looking for investing ideas, maybe can give Uncle Stock Screener a try.

Cheers!

Market News In 2 Minutes @ 10th April 2015 (Hyflux, Noble Group, Singtel)

As stock investors (even though a small one), it is important to keep abreast with the latest financial and market news. Since I am in it, I thought it might be worthwhile to share it out with my readers too.

Hence, I started this "Market News In 2 Minutes" series.

Following are the "Market News In 2 Minutes" for today :

1. Hyflux (600) - Announced that its wholly-owned subsidiary, Hyflux SIP has entered into Equity Transfer Agreements with Hyflux Filtech to acquire the entire issued and paid-up share capital of Hyflux Filtech and Hyflux Unitech. The purchase consideration is $21.8 million, funded through internal resources. Deposits have been placed with the liquidator of Hyflux Filtech, which is considered disbursed by Hyflux SIP towards its partial payment of the consideration. The remaining will be paid in cash within 5 business days upon completion of the shares transfer. (source : Shares Investment)

2. Noble Group (N21) - Has refuted reports from Muddy Waters Research, rejecting their allegations as inaccurate, unreliable and misleading. Muddy Waters released a report on Noble, criticising its finances and management. Noble rejects the assertions that the group exists to borrow and burn cash and the claim that it could not sustain debt levels. With its debt-to-capitalisation standing at a historic low of 38 percent coupled with US$5.2 billion of liquidity headroom as at end of FY2014, Noble believes that the claims by Muddy Waters that Noble misled investors or manipulated the accounting in the acquisition and disposal of PT Alhasanie are unfounded.  (source : Shares Investment)

3. Singtel (Z74) - Announced the acquisition of Trustwave of some US$810 million for a 98 percent equity stake. With the possibility of Trustwave turning EPS accretive from 2018 onwards, analysts are cautious about their estimations ahead of Singtel’s FY2015 results releasing in early May. Boosted by higher share prices of its listed associates, its SOTP-based fair value increased $0.15 to $4.31. However, analysts maintain a “HOLD”, noting its limited near-term upside. I Am Back...And Am Still Monitoring UMS and Lippo Malls Indonesia Trust

If you are following my blog closely, you will noticed that I have not been posting for the past 7 days, reason being that I was back to my hometown (Malaysia) to accompany my beloved mother's last ride. It's a mixture of sadness and relieve for her passing on. Sadness because the 44 years of mother-son relationship was ended here (but she will always in our heart) and relieve because of her long term old-age sickness.

Life goes on and the best way to repay her is continue to live life to the fullest.

Now, let's get back to what I intended to share on this post. For the past few weeks or so, I've been monitoring two counters and they are in my watch-list for quite some time. I am keen to get them for dividend yield play. Following are the two counters :

1. UMS (558.SI):
Current Price : $0.55
My original target entry price : $0.53
My Note : I queued early last week with no success and it has been on the upward trend for the past few days. Click here for my earlier coverage of UMS.
Conclusion : I will continue to keep it in my watch-list and will get in if it crosses below $0.54

2. Lippo Malls Indonesia Retail Trust (D5IU.SI):
Current Price : $0.35
My original target entry price : $0.33
My Note : I didn't queue for this counter before. Click here (CNAV Analysis) and here (5 Years History) for my earlier coverage of Lippo Malls Indonesia Retail Trust.
Conclusion : I will continue to keep it in my watch-list and will get in if it crosses below $0.34 and also considering to get this counter under my upcoming Maybank's MIP (Monthly Investment Plan), of which I am still waiting for them to process my application.

Cheers!
